Description

The City of Newberry is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as Assistant Director of Public Works and Facilities. This role provides leadership and operational oversight for public infrastructure services, including streets and roads, right-of-way maintenance, stormwater systems, cemetery operations, and general public works functions.

The position also provides administrative oversight and coordination of routine maintenance activities for City-owned facilities to ensure safe and functional work environments.

This position supports the Director in maintaining safe, well-maintained public infrastructure while supporting operational needs across City departments.


Essential Functions

Leadership & Administration

• Champion the City’s core values: Teamwork, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Leadership, and Superior Service.
• Supervise public works division supervisors and field personnel.
• Assist in hiring, training, and performance management.
• Participate in operating budget preparation and capital improvement planning.
• Develop operational plans and maintenance schedules.


Public Infrastructure Operations

Oversee maintenance and construction of:

  •  Streets and roadways
  •  Stormwater systems and drainage infrastructure
  • Right-of-way areas
  • Sidewalks and related infrastructure
  •  Cemetery operations and maintenance
  • Coordinate roadway resurfacing and repair projects.
  • Ensure compliance with FDOT standards where applicable.
  •  Manage work order systems and preventive maintenance schedules.
  •  Oversee fleet and equipment utilization related to public works functions.

Facilities Coordination

• Provide oversight of routine maintenance activities for City-owned buildings and facilities.
• Coordinate building repairs including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general structural maintenance through staff or contracted services.
• Assist in scheduling facility inspections and ensuring compliance with applicable building and safety codes.
• Support minor renovation and space modification projects.
• Maintain facility maintenance records and assist in identifying long-term capital replacement needs.


Inspections & Project Management

• Supervise inspection activities for right-of-way and roadway construction.
• Review development plans for compliance with City and FDOT standards.
• Ensure contractor compliance with specifications and safety regulations.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation for public works and facility activities.
• Serve as liaison with contractors, engineers, and regulatory agencies.


Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Public Administration, or related field is preferred but not required. (or comparable combination of education and experience).
• Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience in public works or municipal infrastructure administration.
• Demonstrated experience in roadway maintenance, stormwater systems, capital projects, and budget administration.
• Valid Florida driver’s license.
