Newberry Community School is seeking a dependable and hardworking Custodian to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position plays a key role in the daily upkeep of school facilities, including routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and grounds care. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, able to follow established procedures, and committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Training or experience in custodial work
- Physically able to perform assigned duties
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of equipment used on the job
- Ability to perform routine housekeeping, custodial, and grounds maintenance tasks under close supervision
- Ability to complete assigned duties within a standard workday and follow established schedules and routines
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain working knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment needed to complete assigned tasks
- Utilize custodial and general maintenance equipment such as mops, brooms, buffers, pressure washers, auto scrubbers, stripping machines, and blowers
- Maintain proper care and use of all assigned equipment
- Perform routine cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, sealing, and finishing floors
- Clean and dust furniture
- • Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies
- • Remove trash and garbage
- • Clean glass, walls, ceilings, windows, woodwork, and light fixtures
- • Complete work according to established schedules and standards
- • Receive, track, and distribute materials and supplies as directed
- Move furniture and equipment as needed
- Report and/or perform minor repairs as directed
- Immediately report major damage or repair needs to the supervisor
- Unlock and secure facilities as assigned
- Mix and use cleaning agents according to label instructions and safety guidelines
- Read and interpret equipment operation and maintenance manuals
- Assist in maintaining outdoor areas, including cutting grass, trimming hedges, and cleaning walkways
- Attend custodial-related training sessions
- Demonstrate effective and positive communication skills
- May be required to wear a respirator for certain tasks
- Perform additional duties consistent with the goals of the position
- Maintain a constant state of alertness and work safely at all times
- Perform other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform heavy work, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds as needed to move objects.
Terms of Employment
- Salary and benefits are provided in accordance with the Board’s approved salary schedule.
