Description

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Director, the Bus Driver has the primary responsibility of transporting afterschool participants from Newberry Elementary / Oak View Middle School to the Easton Newberry Sports Complex. The Bus Driver also has the responsibility of transporting summer camp participants to and from field trips during the summer break. It is the role of the Bus Driver to perform pre-trip and post-trip checks on the bus and to transport program participants in a safe manner. This position REQUIRES a CDL license with a passenger endorsement. 

Example of Essential Duties

The essential job functions of the Bus Driver shall include, but not necessarily limited to, the following:

  1. Transports students to the Easton Newberry Sports Complex, following a preplanned route according to a definite time schedule.
  2. Drives bus carefully and in compliance with traffic regulations.
  3. Assumes responsibility for the safety of school children in loading, unloading, and transporting them to the Easton Newberry Sports Complex.
  4. Maintains discipline; reports unruly behavior to supervisor.
  5. Ensures that bus rules are announced and followed.
  6. Completes thorough before-and-after trip checks each day and record all information.
  7. Record gas level, mileage, and maintenance on designated forms.
  8. Fuels vehicle as needed and ensures vehicle is clean and free from trash.
  9. Promotes safety at all times by keeping first aid supplies fully stocked.
  10. Monitor children at all times while in or around the bus.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  1. Knowledge of various, facility safety, equipment safety, City of Newberry policies and procedures.
  2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  3. Ability to relate to students, parents, and other personnel.
  4. Ability to complete various forms and records, including updated route sheets, time sheets, field trip forms, incident and accident reports, etc.
  5. Ability to pass a standard background check and pass a standard drug screening.
  6. Ability to keep commitments and reliably be on time for scheduled shifts.
  7. Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement.

  1. Learn and demonstrate an understanding of Parks & Recreation Department divisions and team goals.

Environment:
Work is primarily preformed in an indoor environment, even though, there may be occasion for outdoor requirements; exposure to noise, grease, fumes, dust mechanical and electrical hazards.

Physical:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, twist, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in performance of daily duties.
