Description

This is semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems.  The employee is responsible for the performance of semi-skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in distribution systems. Work is normally performed under the supervision of a Line Worker 1or 2 and is reviewed through observation, inspection, and apprentice training programs.

Role and Responsibilities
This is semi-skilled work in the operation of the Electrical distribution system. Work involves the construction, maintenance and repair activities on the City Electrical Distribution system.

Illustrative Tasks

  • Embraces and exhibits the City's core values of Teamwork, Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Leadership, and Superior Service.
  • Climbs poles, places cross arms, install wire, and sets transformers and pedestals.
  • Operates line construction equipment, such as digger derrick, bucket trucks, trenchers, backhoes, and other related construction equipment.
  • Work in accordance with all safety rules and regulations.
  • Assists lineman (under supervision) in placing poles, pulling wire, burying cables and supplying equipment to linemen,
  • Keeps crew truck stocked with necessary parts and materials.
  • May be assigned to operate line construction equipment including digger derrick, bucket trucks, trenchers, and backhoe.
  • Responds to electric system trouble calls
  • The employee will assume rotational on-call duties and will be required to work during unfavorable weather conditions. Also, participate in planned and emergency overtime as required.
  • Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use; performs routine service and maintenance.
  • Responds to trouble calls and to service interruption reports on the electrical distribution system
  • Operates heavy motorized equipment used in the construction and maintenance of electric overhead and underground systems.
  • Works in accordance with and assists in enforcing safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs work on unleveled surfaces, within manholes (vaults), from aerial devices, and climbs poles.
  • Responds under emergency conditions.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis

Qualifications and Education Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and six (6) months of experience as an Electrical Trainee. The employee will understand that they will be required to attend a company approved apprenticeship program and complete such program within the required time period
(A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
Possession of valid Class B CDL or higher Florida Driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the City’s Driving Policy and insurance program.

Preferred Skills
  • Basic knowledge of M.O.T. and safe work zone setup
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, City Officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Knowledge of City roads and locations of responsibilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and take precautionary methods to protect self and others.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

Working Conditions
Work requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).

Risk/Safety Conditions
This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
