Description

The City of Newberry is seeking a dedicated and dependable Custodian/Bus Driver to join our team at the Easton Newberry Sports Complex. This dual-role position involves maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of City facilities, performing minor maintenance tasks, transporting mail, supplies, and equipment between City offices, adn driving a City bus to safely transport program participants. Role and Responsibilities:

Custodial Duties:

  • Maintains a timely and accurate cleaning schedule.
  • Cleans and sanitizes City offices and facilities, and meeting rooms.
  • Transports supplies, equipment and applicable correspondence between City offices

Illustrative Tasks:

  • Cleans offices and meeting room chambers, lobbies, restrooms,  and other work areas.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and vacuums floors. Cleans rugs, carpets, and window coverings.
  • Dusts furniture and equipment as required. Polishes metalwork and washes mirrors.
  • Empties trash and garbage containers; transports trash and waste to disposal area.
  • Cleans, washes, and disinfects drinking fountains.
  • Performs and/or reports the need for minor maintenance repairs.
  • Cleans kitchen sinks and counters.
  • Replenishes restroom supplies and maintains an adequate supply of cleaning materials and supplies.
  • Maintains storage and cleaning equipment, materials, and supplies in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Notifies supervisor concerning need for supplies, major repairs, or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Cleans sidewalks and grounds, removing debris and litter.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

Transportation Duties
  • Safely transport after-school participants from designated schools to the Easton Newberry Sports Complex. 
  • Drive summer camp participants on field trips during summer breaks. 
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and ensure cleanliness and safety of the vehicle. 
  • Fuel vehicles as needed and record gas levels, mileage, and maintenance needs. 
  • Maintain safety supplies, including fully stocked first ad kits. 
  • Enforce bus rules, maintain discipline, and ensure safe loading and unloading of passengers. 
  • Drive in compliance with traffic laws and City regulations. 
Illustrative Tasks:
  • Transport supplies, equipment, and correspondence between City offices.
  • Monitor children on and around the bus.
 
 
Qualifications and Education Requirements


Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Must possess at least one (1) year of related commercial or public works custodial experience.
Possession of valid Class B CDL Florida Driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment) with driving record acceptable to the City Driving Policy and insurance program.

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and tactful, effective and courteous attitude in dealing with co-workers, other departments and the public.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain a vehicle in clean, proper working order.
  • Knowledge of Newberry geography and location of all City departments.
  • Ability to read a City map.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
  • Skill in operating vacuum cleaners, floor washers, buffers, and related cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand labels, instructions, use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to communicate directly with the general public and City staff.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed indoors but requires some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.) or extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust. The employee is frequently exposed to dust, mold and mildew and caustic and irritating cleaning chemicals; and is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles associated with toner cartridges in printing, fax, and copy equipment.


Risk/Safety Conditions

This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.).  This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. Must be willing and able to clean up unpleasant bio-hazardous waste (blood, saliva and other bodily fluids) in a safe and sanitary manner.

Essential Physical Activities:
Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.  Frequent lifting of 10 to 15 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; to walk; to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; to reach with hands and arms; to talk and hear, and to smell.
