Newberry Community School is seeking a reliable and experienced Head Custodian to oversee the cleanliness, maintenance, and safety of school facilities and grounds. This position plays a key role in supervising custodial staff while also performing hands-on duties to ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment that supports students, staff, and daily school operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of three (3) years of successful custodial and light maintenance experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training & experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Proficient in the use of custodial equipment and cleaning chemicals
- Knowledge of OSHA standards related to assigned duties
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to assume assigned responsibilities and work collaboratively with others
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks
- Possess strong supervisory skills
- Ability to understand and generate verbal and written instructions and reports
- Ability to plan work assignments, supervise and direct custodial personnel, while performing routine custodial tasks
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, administrators, and outside agencies
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist supervisor with assigning, coordinating, and overseeing custodial services
- Perform routine maintenance, custodial, and grounds work to ensure safety and appearance, including proper use of equipment
- Assist in identifying custodial, maintenance, and safety needs
- Open and secure facilities as assigned
- Assist with lifting and moving heavy objects
- Supervise the distribution and use of custodial supplies and equipment
- Support custodial staff in using effective cleaning techniques
- Follow all procedures for handling flammable materials and proper waste disposal
- Conduct periodic inspections of electrical systems and report concerns
- Regulate heating and cooling systems to maintain appropriate temperatures and efficient use of resources
- Monitor hallways, walkways, restrooms, and lunch areas for cleanliness
- Inspect offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, hallways, and restrooms for cleanliness and maintenance
- Requisition and distribute custodial supplies
- Serve as the receiving and distribution point for school materials and equipment
- Participate in safety inspections and prevention activities
- Assist with setup for events, meetings, and school functions
- Assist with grounds maintenance as needed
- Serve on committees as appropriate
- Follow all safety standards and guidelines
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions
- Follow Board policies and departmental procedures
- Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, administrators, and the public using professionalism and good judgment
- Identify issues or opportunities for improvement and keep supervisors informed
- Demonstrate initiative in daily responsibilities
- Support the school’s goals and priorities
- Work effectively as part of a team
- Maintain attendance, punctuality, and appropriate dress
- Maintain confidentiality of workplace information
- Maintain knowledge and expertise in assigned areas
- Manage time efficiently

Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform heavy work, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds as needed to move objects.
Terms of Employment
- Salary and benefits are provided in accordance with the Board’s approved salary schedule.
- Work year and hours are established by the Board.
