The City of Newberry is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to fill the position of Water Operator I. This is a skilled technical position requiring advanced working knowledge in the operation and maintenance of a municipal water distribution system. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other water technicians to ensure the efficient operation and integrity of the City’s water infrastructure.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance on water lines, valves, meters, and related infrastructure.
- Assist with the installation and repair of water distribution components, including new service connections and mainline extensions.
- Operate heavy equipment and tools in support of water system projects.
- Troubleshoot and resolve water distribution issues, including leaks and pressure problems.
- Follow all applicable safety standards and protocols in daily operations.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed with daily work orders and materials used.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned under the general direction of the Water Supervisor.
- Ability in map making and recording information about water lines and valves throughout the distribution system.
- May be required to supervise FDOC inmate work squads.
- Accurately completes weekly maintenance records for vehicles and equipment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Knowledge of tools, materials, and techniques used in water line installation and repair.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, and trenchers is preferred.
- Must possess a valid Florida Class “C” Water Distribution License
- Must have a valid Florida driver’s license; Class B CDL preferred
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Must have at least two (2) years’ experience in pipelines repairs, meter reading, meter testing or other distribution/collection work is required.
- Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Intermediate Level Training Certification preferred or obtained as required
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in varied weather conditions.
- Requires physical strength and stamina to perform manual labor and operate heavy equipment.
- May involve exposure to hazardous conditions such as traffic, confined spaces, and pressurized water systems.

This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment). Position requires bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights. This position may require lifting up to 100 lbs. and carrying up to 100 lbs.
