The City of Capital Projects & Facilities Department is seeking hardworking, dependable and coachable individuals to join our team. As a Facilities Maintenance Technician I, you will play a key role in keeping our City looking its best by performing a wide variety of tasks to ensure our parks, athletic fields, landscaping, buildings and grounds are properly cared for and maintained. Successful candidates will be able to work a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays. This is skilled work in diversified facilities maintenance, repair, and construction for all City facilities. Performs a variety of routine semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of City-owned buildings facilities and grounds. Work is performed under the general direction of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Performs proper maintenance and repair of all city-owned buildings and leased facilities including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, Heating Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, carpentry and general maintenance. Using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment; participates in the maintenance, repair of buildings and facilities and grounds. 
  • Performs inspections and provides maintenance on playground equipment and play structures, and athletic fields.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on tools and equipment, ensuring cleanliness and reports defect or needed repairs to supervisors.
  • Performs Custodial tasks, including cleaning and litter/trash control duties.
  • Maintain parks and landscaped areas by mowing, trimming, edging, fertilizing, watering, weeding, pruning, mulching, and applying pesticides and herbicides. Prepare soil, seed, sod, and plant trees, shrubs, and flowers. 
  • Grooms and prepares athletic playing fields and other landscaped areas for scheduled sporting events and public use; renovate and retrofit as needed. 
  • Repairs and maintains irrigation systems, including adjusting timing mechanisms and replacing faulty components. 
  • Conducts frequent inspections of ongoing construction projects to ensure safety and compliance. 
  • Receives and understands written and verbal instruction.  Attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Performs a variety of routine maintenance; changing light bulbs, light switches, and light sockets, exhaust fans, light plumbing (water leaks, restroom repairs and kitchen repairs), painting, assembly and disassembly of office furniture and moving furniture, replace, and repair sprinkler systems. 
  • Operates motorized vehicles and construction and specialized equipment, including pickup truck, mowers, saws, pumps, sanders, generators, compactor, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone and all other related tools and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, patiently and courteously with City employees, and other community members.
  • Performs monthly routine maintenance on the Air Conditioners, changing the filters and cleaning the coils.
  • Provides after-hours support for rental facilities/sporting and special events as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Full time presence on job.

  • Graduation from high school, or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak, read, and write the English language
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with the public.
  • A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualification.
  • Required to possess a valid Class B CDL Florida Driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the City Driving Policy and insurance program or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.

What will help you hit the ground running at a Facilities Technician?

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools involving the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of buildings, plumbing, electrical, Irrigation, and HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of building codes, fire codes and safety regulations such as local and International codes (building, Electrical, and Plumbing), OSHA, EPA regulations, and ADA requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other governmental entities, co-workers and the public.
  • Knowledge of the methods and operating rules of various types of equipment, such as bucket trucks, zero turn mowers, backhoes, dump trucks, with an understanding of safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of proper athletic field turf maintenance techniques and programs.
  • Ability to understand written and visual instructions regarding building code requirements and other industry standards as they relate to facility repairs and maintenance.
  • Skill in reading, and interpreting complicated construction, mechanical, electrical, blueprints, and other related drawings.
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills for effective public interaction.

Frequent use of both arms and hands are required to perform functions that require positioning while fastening of fixtures, furnishings and equipment.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally assist with lifting and/or moving more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
